Understanding the EU Price Indication Directive
The EU Price Indication Directive (98/6/EC) is a legislation aimed at promoting transparency, fairness, and consumer protection in pricing practices throughout the European Union. The directive sets out requirements that businesses must follow when indicating the prices of their products or services. By ensuring that consumers have access to clear, accurate, and comparable pricing information, the directive empowers them to make informed decisions when purchasing goods and services.
Key Requirements of the EU Price Indication Directive:
- Unit Pricing: The directive requires that the selling price and the unit price of a product be clearly displayed. The unit price refers to the cost per standard unit of measurement (e.g., per kilogram, liter, or meter). This enables consumers to compare the prices of products effectively, regardless of packaging size or brand.
- Dual Pricing: If a business decides to use a promotional price or a discounted price for a limited period, both the original price and the promotional price must be displayed. This allows consumers to understand the savings they can achieve through the promotional offer.
- Inclusive Pricing: All prices displayed must be inclusive of any taxes, such as VAT, or additional charges. This ensures that consumers have a clear understanding of the total cost of a product or service.
- Currency Indication: Prices must be displayed in the local currency of the country where the product or service is being sold. This helps consumers understand the pricing in their familiar currency.
- Clear and Unambiguous Information: The directive emphasizes that all price indications should be unambiguous, easily identifiable, and clearly legible. Businesses should avoid using any misleading or confusing tactics that could deceive or confuse consumers.
